Is This a Dental Emergency? A Parent’s Guide to Tooth Troubles

Between gym class accidents and those mystery toothaches that seem to appear right at bedtime, families deal with a lot of dental surprises.

But can the issue wait until your next visit, or should you bring your child in right away for emergency dental care in Rehoboth Beach?

We want to make sure you feel prepared when a dental hiccup occurs. Not every “ouch” requires an emergency room visit, but knowing the red flags can help you act fast when it matters most.

The “Wait and See” vs. “Go Now” Checklist

To help simplify things, we like to use a simple stoplight system for dental issues:

  • Green (Routine): A dull ache that comes and goes, a minor chip with no pain, or a lost filling. These should be addressed soon, but you can usually wait for the next available appointment.
  • Yellow (Urgent): Sensitivity to hot/cold, food getting stuck painfully between teeth, or a gum “pimple.” These indicate the start of an issue that will likely become a “Red” emergency if left for more than a few days. Seek same-day care if possible
  • Red (Emergency): A tooth that has been knocked out or moved out of alignment, severe throbbing that prevents sleep, or swelling that extends to the cheek or under the jaw. Get to our dental office as soon as possible for emergency dentistry in Rehoboth beach.

What to Do While You’re on the Way for Emergency Dental Care

If you find yourself in a “Red” situation, there are things you can do at home to help. For pain and swelling, a cold compress on the outside of the cheek (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) is your best friend. For a toothache, rinsing with warm salt water can help clear out debris and soothe the tissue. Most importantly, avoid putting aspirin directly on the gums, as this can cause a chemical burn. Never attempt to glue or repair a tooth or restoration on your own, as this can lead to more damage.
